This fascinating tree, located at a place called Hacienda Baru, has giant buttress roots. Typically, this kind of trees are found in nutrient-poor tropical forest soils that may not be very deep. They prevent the tree from falling over while also gathering more nutrients.

My favorite trees! Sometimes you'll see these roots as tall as a grown man, they are so mystical. Lilly said she thinks this one is an Ent (walking trees from Lord of the Rings) and so talked to it and was careful not to step on its "legs" as we went by. (Hacienda Baru preserve – we had to visit after I read a book by its founder and then met him here!)
